It took many years but Emily finally decided that she had enough with her husband’s hazardous and careless drinking. She was exhausted from seeing Barry come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending time with the family. She was also tired of the second DWI Barry recently got. Furthermore she was worn-out from making excuses for Barry when he couldn’t show up for work due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was apprehensive and depressed about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry’s careless drinking. And finally she was sick of the risky financial quandary into which he had placed his family due to his unhealthy drinking behavior. In sum, Emily felt that her mental health was fading away because of her husband’s drinking problems.

When Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Positive About a Person’s Problem Drinking

One Wednesday morning when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s negative drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something helpful to cut into the damaging cycle of Barry’s abusive and excessive drinking behavior.

So she looked in the yellow pages under “alcohol rehab” and located several rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than 30 miles away from where she and Barry lived.

Since she didn’t know much about these rehabilitation facilities, she eventually made up her mind that she needed to call some of them and ask a few questions. When she called each rehab center she introduced herself and stated that her husband was engaging in unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior. She also articulated that Barry, her husband, had an excellent health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol addiction rehabilitation would be covered if a health care professional in the company health program suggested the rehabilitation.

At one rehab facility, Emily was pleasantly surprised that she was able to converse directly with a healthcare practitioner who asked her to come to the treatment facility to talk about her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking behavior in much greater detail.

Emily Talks to a Doctor About Her Husband’s Abusive Drinking

When Emily arrived at the treatment center, she filled out some paperwork and then after just a few minutes got to see a therapist.

After listening to Emily talk about her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking, the psychologist in an encouraging but firm way told Emily how she may have contributed to her spouse’s hazardous and careless drinking through the months and the years by making excuses for him instead of letting him go through the results of his careless drinking behavior.

Emily Finds Out She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Abusive and Hazardous Drinking

Stated more precisely, the doctor told Emily that she may have been unintentionally enabling Barry’s excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior. The therapist also highlighted the fact that even though Emily could not control her spouse’s actions, with the encouragement and guidance of the rehabilitation team at the rehabilitation clinic she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s abusive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to help him schedule an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could go over his unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior with a therapist.

Fortunately after Emily explained this to her husband, and he saw that she was not joking, Barry told her that he had been very apprehensive about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior and that he was quite relieved to hear that Emily wanted to do something beneficial about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehab center.

Barry Agrees to Meet With a Therapist About His Excessive Drinking

While simply calling a rehab facility does not guarantee that a person’s excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior will end or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one exhibits will simply disappear, scheduling an appointment is undoubtedly a vital aspect in the treatment process. And because Barry was serious about getting professional assistance for his unhealthy drinking, the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly augmented.
